Classic design for an iconic location

Caffe Bartolo is an all day Italian cafe, bar + restaurant in the heart of Surry Hills, Sydney.

Our brief was to create a warm inviting space that could transition and adapt from early morning breakfast service, to a late night cocktail & aperitif bar, and everything in between. Working with our dear friend Mr Jared Merlino + his team is always a pleasure, & this project was no exception.

Jared’s rich family history was a beautiful starting point for the design. Original family photos and documents and Aunty Rita’s champion greyhounds, all provided the perfect visual language to tell the story. This family story was woven into the design narrative from the outset.

Some of the more noteworthy design details include, the 12meter custom profiled green marble bench tops! Bespoke indoor and outdoor table tops featuring the trademark Bartolo Double Bullnose! Vintage light fittings throughout, including original 1940’s Prague tram lights! We also created our very own custom ‘Bartolo Green’ paint colour, which features on the bar fronts and original windows, the bar fascia being hand waxed and finished with walnut veneer.
